Finding Software Bugs in Embedded Devices

AbstractThe goal of this chapter is to introduce the reader to the domain of bug discovery in embedded systems which are at the core of the Internet of Things. Embedded software has a number of particularities which makes it slightly different to general purpose software. In particular, embedded devices are more exposed to software attacks but have lower defense levels and are often left unattended. At the same time, analyzing their security is more difficult because they are very “opaque”, while the execution of custom and embedded software is often entangled with the hardware and peripherals. Evolutionary White-Box Software Test with the EvoTest Framework: A Progress Report

Evolutionary white-box software testing has been extensively researched but is not yet applied in industry. In order to investigate the reasons for this, we evaluated a prototype version of a tool, representing the state-of-the-art for evolutionary structural testing, which is targeted at industrial use. The focus was on the applicability of the structural test tool in the industrial context and not on assessment of the test cases generated. This work examines the FPGA programmable logic platforms applied to minimum losses control of a Permanent Magnet Synchronous Motor (PMSM), which represents a flexible solution for the implementation of an advanced digital control algorithm, given their intrinsic parallel structure and the capability to be directly reprogrammable in the field.
